Black Lives Matter

We stand with the protestors around the country and the world. We're donating to organizations that are fighting social injustice, gathering educational resources, and giving up to 10% of all sales sitewide to the NAACP.

Acknowledgement

We are not perfect. We could be, should be, and must become a more diverse and representative company. As it stands, the vast majority of the diversity in our company resides within our stores, rather than our corporate office. We're committed to improvement and addressing this imbalance. And we're committed to acknowledging, and learning from, our own failures and shortcomings for the long-term. We are committed to day-to-day action to pursue improvement and will share our progress over time.

In Response

Donations

We've donated to Reclaim the Block, Black Visions Collective, Color of Change, and the NAACP. Shopping online or in-store, up to 10% of sales will also be donated to the NAACP.

Policies

We've begun to establish a permanent, autonomous, and democratic committee — welcoming participants from across our organization, regardless of title — to autonomously oversee our efforts to improve diversity, as well as general day-to-day culture. The group will participate in hiring, reviewing our brand sourcing, auditing our policies and procedures, and more as we look ahead.

Partners

With The Commons, we are providing free space to local brands, artists, musicians, and chefs. Many of the participants are BIPOC-owned businesses. Beyond The Commons, we are holding ourselves to account to have further representation in our stores, as well as ensuring our other brand partners support for the same ideals. We'll strive for 15% of our brands to be Black-owned, at a minimum, per the 15% Pledge.

Education

As a small gesture on our part, we delayed our store openings in Texas out of solidarity with protests. As a longer term effort, we have committed to providing paid time-off for team members wishing to participate in peaceful protests during work hours. Juneteenth is now a recognized and paid company-wide holiday. Looking ahead, we're pursuing bias training, external audits of our policies/procedures, and more, too.

Our Team

In an effort to begin addressing the imbalance in our company, we're issuing equity to all Store and HQ employees, while also elevating hourly pay. The equity will be backdated and on unique terms for our Store team members. We're hiring for our HR team to ensure we hold our current team to account, while working to improve our hiring and management practices going forward.

The Commons

We’re providing a free platform for local and independent brands affected by COVID-19. Our first participating class of brands is now available online and in-store.
